Use an Economics Master's Degree to Solve Real-World Problems

The Economics M.A. degree provides students with rigorous quantitative and analytical skills to find a career in the public or private sector or pursue a Ph.D. degree in economics. The program emphasizes practical applications of economic theory in a one-year program with small class sizes that allow students to work closely with each other and with faculty. Faculty support students in applying to job positions, Ph.D. programs, and internships.

Students develop analytical tools that they can use to solve many economic problems existing in the real world. They also get students experience with practical econometric skills that are popularly used in both private and public sectors. Funding opportunities are available on a competitive basis.

STEM-designated: The M.A. in Economics program qualifies as an designated program, allowing international students to extend their training in the United States by 24 months after graduation.

Our economics graduate degree prepares students for employment opportunities in both private and public sectors. Alternative placements include think tanks, consulting firms, research institutes, government agencies, international organizations, and private corporations. The M.A. in Economics also provides students with opportunities to continue graduate studies. 

Possible career paths include:

  • Data Analyst: Work with and analyze large economic datasets.
  • Research Analyst: Research and analyze economic phenomena.
  • Financial manager: Analyze economic aspects of a company or organization.
  • Policy analyst: Analyze economic problems and recommend policies.

Economics M.A. Courses & Degree Requirements

All academic requirements can be completed within 12 months, beginning in the fall semester and ending in August of the following year. 

Graduation Requirements

A minimum of 36 credit hours (9 academic courses) is required to complete the program: 32 credit hours in core courses (mathematical economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, and master's paper) and 4 hours in an elective course (international economics, development economics, environmental economics, behavioral economics, etc.). At the end of the program, students need to complete a research paper (4 credit hours) under the supervision of one faculty member.

Culminating Experience

Students must successfully complete either a capstone research paper or a thesis, with a minimum of 4 hours in one of the two capstone courses:

  • ECON 6950 - Master鈥檚 Thesis
  • ECON 6960 - Master鈥檚 Paper

Grade Requirements

Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in their program of study throughout the duration of their program. A student earning less than a 3.0 cumulative GPA will be placed on academic probation for the following academic term, including summer sessions if enrolled. If the student achieves a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher after the probationary term, they will be removed from probation. However, if the student鈥檚 cumulative GPA remains below 3.0 at the end of the next term, their status will be reviewed by the College鈥檚 Graduate Committee. A student on academic probation who fails to make satisfactory progress toward the minimum 3.0 GPA will be dismissed from the program.

It is important to note that a GPA cannot be "rounded up" to meet the 3.0 requirement. For example, a GPA of 2.999 (or any value below 3.0) does not qualify as a 3.0.

花季传媒 graduate students must earn a minimum grade of C (2.0 grade points) in any course for it to count toward graduation credit. Students receiving a grade lower than a C in any course are required to retake the course. It should be noted that each course is offered only once a year, meaning retaking a course will require waiting one year.

Funding Opportunities

Funding opportunities are available on a competitive basis. The grade point average (GPA), the university from which the candidate has graduated, and other credentials are used for aid decisions. 

No separate form is required to apply for financial aid. The applicant needs to specify if he or she would like to apply for aid in the graduate application form.
