OHIO alumnus Greg Mehlman inspires future educators through leadership, service

Greg Mehlman, a 2019 graduate of , is putting his passion for education into action as the elementary principal for Shadyside Local School District.

After earning his bachelor鈥檚 degree in early childhood education from OHIO Eastern, Mehlman went on to receive his master鈥檚 degree in educational leadership from the American College of Education. His academic journey and dedication to the profession were further recognized in February 2023, when he received the 鈥攁n honor presented monthly by WTRF 7News in partnership with The Health Plan to recognize outstanding educators.

鈥溁敬� Eastern was close to home and convenient,鈥� Mehlman said. 鈥淏ut more importantly, it offered hands-on opportunities that directly connected to my future career. I was able to complete observation hours and student teaching placements in local schools throughout the Ohio Valley. That real-world classroom experience鈥攚orking alongside local educators and interacting with students鈥攚as invaluable. It helped me build confidence, understand best practices, and form relationships within the education community that still benefit me today.鈥�  

During his time at OHIO Eastern, Mehlman said he found lasting friendships, meaningful academic experiences, and influential mentors鈥攎ost notably Kim Ciroli, associate professor of instruction and program director of the program.

鈥淜im Ciroli was my most influential professor and is still a continual support in the field,鈥� Mehlman said. 鈥淓ven now as a principal, I know I can call or email her for guidance. She鈥檚 truly an asset to the profession.鈥�

Ciroli said watching Mehlman grow from student to school leader has been a rewarding experience.

鈥淕reg exemplifies the mission of our program,鈥� Ciroli said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 dedicated to creating student-centered learning environments and supporting his colleagues and community. It鈥檚 inspiring to see alumni like Greg making such a meaningful impact.鈥�

Before becoming principal, Mehlman taught kindergarten鈥攁n experience that deepened his understanding of early childhood development and strengthened his connection to students and families. 

Mehlman also continues to stay engaged with his alma mater by giving back to current OHIO Eastern students. Most recently, he participated in mock interviews with 2025 education seniors during the fall semester, helping prepare them for professional internships. 

In his role as principal, Mehlman also oversees the partnership between Shadyside Elementary and OHIO Eastern鈥檚 Education program, providing valuable clinical field placements for teacher candidates. This past academic year, the school welcomed three students into classroom placements鈥攖wo in a kindergarten classroom and another in a yearlong preschool placement鈥攐ffering hands-on mentorship and guidance to future educators.

Mehlman encourages current and future OHIO Eastern students to take advantage of all the opportunities the campus offers鈥攊ncluding clubs and social gatherings, which he says are excellent for networking. He also urges prospective students not to second-guess their decision.

鈥淢y advice? Do not hesitate,鈥� Mehlman said. 鈥淗ave a vision and goals鈥攚ork toward them, and they will be achieved at the right time.鈥�

Mehlman credits OHIO Eastern with helping build the foundation for his career in education and leadership.

鈥淭he education I received provided the groundwork for everything I do today,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t set me on the right path鈥攏ot just as a teacher, but as a leader.鈥�
