Southwest Airlines Discount Agreement and New Airline Policy Updates
We鈥檙e pleased to share that the University has successfully renewed its discount agreement with Southwest Airlines, effective July 1, 2025. This updated agreement provides discounted rates for flights originating from the John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) based on the type of fare selected.
The applicable fares and the related discount rates are:

To secure these discounted rates, travel must be booked through Concur or through Christopherson Business Travel via ohio@cbtravel.com.
Additionally, independent of the university agreement with Southwest Airlines, as of June 2025, Southwest Airlines has implemented significant changes to its baggage policies, seating assignments, and fare structures, marking a departure from its traditional offerings. Here's an overview of these changes and how they differ from previous policies:
- End of "Bags Fly Free": Southwest Airlines has discontinued its long-standing policy of allowing all passengers to check two bags for free, regardless of the fare type purchased.
- Discontinuation of 鈥淥pen Seating Policy鈥: Southwest Airlines is moving away from its open seating policy, introducing assigned seating starting in the third quarter of calendar year 2025, with full implementation expected by early 2026.
- New Fare Classes (be sure to check terms and conditions of fares as many may not be refundable should your travel plans change):
- Basic Fare (formerly "Wanna Get Away"): Offers the lowest price but includes fewer perks, such as no free checked bags and limited seat selection.
- Choice (formerly "Wanna Get Away Plus"): Includes benefits like transferable flight credits and same-day changes.
- Choice Preferred (formerly "Anytime"): Offers early boarding, refundable tickets, and access to preferred seating.
- Choice Extra (formerly "Business Select"): Provides the most benefits, including two free checked bags, complimentary extra legroom seats, and in-flight internet.
- This is considered an upgraded fare and is only permitted for flights exceeding five hours in duration or if the traveler has an approved accommodation from the Office of University Accessibility per university travel policy 41.121.
These changes represent a significant shift for Southwest Airlines. Travelers are highly encouraged to review the new policies, fare options, and fare terms and conditions when booking future flights to ensure they select the best option for their needs and within university policy.
